Monti is one of my absolute favorite neighborhoods in Rome! It has a much more local flavor than Prati, Historic Rome, Trastevere, where I spent a lot of my time, yet still has amazing land marks to see. Here I found my favorite panini shop, one of my favorite gelato shops, an amazing hole-in-the-wall vintage shop, the Colosseum, the Roman forum, and the Imperial forum! Now I’m not usually one for sandwiches, but when in Rome right? When it came to their local paninis, these were some of the best meals I have ever had! So good that I had to go back another time for a panini and fresh juice! The gelato shop was a recommendation from one of our local professors, Francesca, who was born and raised in Rome and actually when to college for architecture in Monti. My favorite vintage shop had well worn clothes, leather bags, military jackets, leather boots, retro shades, and more vintage denim than you can image! They actually had one section where items were sold individually and one where they sold items by the kilo at amazing prices! The Colosseum while amazing and a marvel of its own was not actually my favorite part of Monti, mine was the Roman forum. To imagine that the land we were walking through, the truly ancient columns, churches, and buildings that gladiators not only walked on but used to dress, practice, and prepare for their battles in the Colosseum was truly amazing! To realize the fact that the buildings, columns, and arches we were walking through were underground and undiscovered until just 50 years ago just blows me away! The Imperial forum while you are not able to walk through is still amazing to look upon.
